L. Dekker considers NZ citizenship to realise her dream. (pic: blog.linxiting.com/ index.php/category/news)
Today should have been the first day of her sailing trip around the world to set a new record as the youngest person to sail solo around the world…
…but 13-year old Laura Dekker was placed under state supervision for two months by a Dutch court last Friday, as it agreed to child protection authorities who said letting her depart was irresponsible. - read more
Dekker holds a NZ passport as was born at sea on her parents’ boat in New Zealand and wanted to immigrate to New Zealand in order to claim citizenship, which would enable her to start her trip from New Zealand shores. The Dutch Newspaper De Volkskrant, however, reported her New Zealand passport had expired. -read more on Laura’s deregistration plans

Mike Perham (17) has everything he needs on his yacht. (pic: latimesblogs.latimes.com/ outposts/sailing/)
Record holder Mike Perham from Hertfordshire, England, started his journey around the world at the age of 16 and was celebrating his 17th birthday on March 16, 2009, in the South Indian Ocean. Being the youngest person who has sailed singe-handed around the world, crossed the finishing line between Lizard Point and Ushant, France, on August 27, 2009, after having spent 158 days at sea, just right at the time when Laura Dekker’s journey has been blocked by the authorities.
WHAT DO YOU THINK???
SHOULD LAURA DEKKER BE GRANTED NEW ZEALAND CITIZENSHIP SO THAT SHE CAN START HER JOURNEY AT OUR SHORES?
13 seems awfully young to even think about a trip of that magnitude. I’d vote no.
