From… to…

Destination anywhere

Being from Germany and having studied at New Zealand’s Whitireia Community Polytechnic in Wellington turned me automatically into an ‘international journalism student’ and  a ‘ethnic minority’ in class – which helped the statistic in a sense that it guarantees an equation between different people with different origins. So I suppose it’s a good thing.

Our family business, the restaurant "Sonne"

Having studied almost  about 20 000 km far away from home, however, implies that I don’t mind travelling or distances. And that’s what this blog is about: travelling, distances, migrating, being away from home and being close to home, finding home.

Name the place and I’ll be there

Whitireia Campus on Cuba St, Wellington

I was living in New Zealand for about almost two years. Nothing new to me, I’ve been here when I was still at college – as an exchange student, young, naive and full of a sense for adventure.

In (German) summer 2009 I went back to Germany, spending a little time with my (original) German family as well as with my Kiwi (host) family. During that time more than ever I noticed differences and similarities between the two countries but soon I felt the desire to travel again – back to New Zealand.

So after a short trip around Germany I followed my Kiwi family back to New Zealand, successfully completed my studies and then… well… went back to Germany again.

So here I am, feeling a bit like an intergalactical yo-yo, travelling backwards and forwards, but I finally have overcome my jetlag and now I feel confident to plunge into work -better known as the fine arts of research- to plan my next trip… Where to? I don’t know. I’m not planning THAT far ahead. Destination anwhere – name the place and I’ll be there.
